Balance Tips for Your Home Based Business

It's HARD! Most home-based working moms and other entrepreneurs are saying the same thing now, how do I do it all? How can I run a business and balance a family at the same time? I know, I've been working at home since 1985 and although it gets easier, it is still a challenge.

Here are tips for finding balance. They have helped me considerably. I hope they help you as well.

1. Keep in mind that it's a learning process. No one is perfect. One of the greatest gifts I did learn was to no longer beat myself up so much. So what if I didn't do it all today. So what if my house didn't pass a white glove test today (or ever). I really enjoy my business. I really enjoy my family. I feel as long as I do the best I can do, I'm a winner today.

2. To be able to get it all done and enjoy your family, create boundaries, both work-related and personal. You don't want to have to do it all and once you start saying no, you'll be amazed how truly awesome it feels. When you keep in control, things run better. Plus, I believe both your family and clients appreciate knowing what is expected of them.

3. Have a schedule to follow and stick to it as much as possible. Avoid unnecessary interruptions, including constant e-mail checking. Set a timer for checking emails, message boards, routine tasks. Think of time as money. Avoid time robbers such as friends that IM all day just to chat. This isn't to say you can't have fun and friends, you want that, just keep control and don't let it interrupt your day.

4. Get out of the office and do your work whenever possible. I do a lot of writing as a virtual assistant and publicist. Instead of sitting in the office, I go outside and work. It feels great to have a change of pace. A good cup of java and I'm good to go. Plus, find out if you can take your kids places and work. I will often go places that my kids can play, while I work.

5. Multitask whenever possible. When I prepare dinner, I will often do a crock-pot meal with the meat designated and also prepare a meal in the oven as well so I'll get two meals out of it. You feel like Day 2 is a day off. Also, I'll prepare lunch for tomorrow at dinner. That way I can prepare a healthy lunch and snack the night before for both of us. When I'm not in a rush in the morning, I have more time to devote to putting healthy things together. You'd be amazed how good it feels to stop and eat a pre-made salad or sandwich while working instead of grabbing for something else.

6. Take small vacations to get away. Plan a Friday, Saturday, Sunday vacation. This helps because we don't feel overworked. Also, when you're busy, don't let exercise and going to the gym be the things you give up. You need those for energy.

7. Take weekends and evenings off. It's so easy to get caught up working 24/7. But when you take this time off, you feel so much more energized. And you get to connect more with your children.

Working at home can be a challenge, but it can also be the most rewarding journey ever. I believe that not only I benefit from the experience, but my children as well. They get to see a confident positive mom who loves going to work every day. And that's priceless

It’s now almost two years since I started dabbling on the internet, trying to make money online. At that time it was a bit of an experiment, kind of like a hobby - something that I did partly for the enjoyment and partly in the hope that I would make enough money to leave my day job.

Now, 20 months later my hobby has turned in to a business and it is generating enough income from for me to happily go part time at work.

Should I decide to do this I’ll be taking the huge step from working on my business in my spare time to earn some extra money, to working half the week for myself. I will then be depending on the money from my own business to pay my mortgage and bills.

If I manage to achieve the same success working from home during the day as I have over the last year working a few hours here and there in my spare time I’ll be well on my way to becoming a full time home business entrepreneur.

I know this sounds fantastic, but what if something goes wrong? If I eventually work full time for myself I’ll be giving up a regular full time salary, not to mention company pension, sick pay and bonuses. For this reason I decided to ask myself a few questions. I’ve put together a list of 5 questions that you need to ask yourself before you leave your day job

1. Do you have a financial cushion? Before you give up your full time or part time job, make sure you have some money in the bank in case something goes wrong. Preferably you should make sure that you have no credit card debts or loans and have at least 3 months salary in the bank just to allow you to get back on your feet if the worst happens.

2. Are you making enough money? Sounds obvious, but remember to add up your current outgoings to see if your online income will cover everything. Remember to take into account tax payments and allow for the fact that you’ll no longer receive paid holidays, health insurance, sick pay and a company pension. If you have a big purchase coming up in the near future, such as a new house, you may want to postpone your full time online career until you’ve secured your mortgage.

3. Are your income streams diverse enough? Are you making all your money from one source? If you’re currently making all your money selling similar items on Ebay or earning an income from a small number of affiliate programs or making money from a single program such as Google Adsense, you could be putting yourself at risk. What if the market for the products you are selling disappears? The affiliate programs you are promoting shuts down? You need to take a close look at the sources of your income. Ideally your income should be coming from numerous sources e.g. selling your own products, promoting different affiliate programs, using multiple websites in different niches.

4. Do you have a business plan? Since you are considering taking such a big step you need to have a business plan. This should include a description of your company and the products and services you provide, the analysis of your market, strategy and implementation along with a financial plan.

5. How will you cope with working alone? If you enjoy working with other people every day, it’s likely that you may find the transition to working alone quite difficult. You should consider possible strategies to cope with this change. For example you may want to make sure that part of your business involves working with other people – perhaps providing a service locally or consulting. Or you could fill the vacuum of not meeting people at work by joining a club or taking a part time training course. Making an effort to stay in touch and meet up with friends and former colleagues regularly will also help.

I was referred to a new business that cost a little more, however I felt it would be worth it to have my yard looking nice. The second business continued to do an excellent job and they received multiple referrals from me.

Running a successful business is about outperforming your competition, it doesn’t matter what field you are in. I recently quit an MLM business because I was so uncomfortable with the marketing methods. What I didn’t realize though, was that I did not have to use those methods. The methods that I was so uneasy with were all offline methods, and they just didn’t suit my style.

I was actually embarrassed to drive around town with big magnets on my car advertising my business. I also did not like leaving my business catalogs in places where I do business. In addition, I was not about to start up a conversation with a stranger in the grocery store. That was another one of the methods that my company recommended.

I loved the company and its products, was very impressed with the management team, and my sponsor was very helpful. However, because I was so unhappy with what I thought was expected of me in order to build my business, I just gave up and quit.

Now, I know that many of you probably think I am crazy for being unwilling to use some of those methods. Some of you use each and every one of them with ease. That is great, but it is just not for me.

The point that I want to make is that with almost any MLM (or any other business, for that matter), you can decide exactly how you want to build your business. I personally prefer using online methods, such as article writing, placing ads (both free and paid), purchasing leads which are specific to my business, posting in forums, and mentioning my business in my email signature.

Look closely at all the options available for marketing your business before you decide that the business is not for you. I made the mistake of thinking that the business I had chosen was flawed. In reality, it was my thinking that was flawed. I eventually went back to my original MLM company and began to do things my way.

I am much happier now that I have figured out how I want to run my business. The company training was not to blame. It is very extensive. I simply thought that I had to try ALL the marketing methods in order to build my business. The truth is, you should find three or four methods that suit you.

Once you do, you should decide which activities should be done daily, weekly, monthly, etc. Stay on track with your regularly scheduled marketing methods, and after awhile you will begin to see the results of your efforts. These business-building methods do not produce results quickly, so you must decide to be extremely patient and persistent. The key is maintaining a regular schedule with each method, and to “keep on keeping on”. Never give up. I know of so many people making great incomes who started slowly at first, but who are so glad that they never gave up.

The real secret to MLM success is to do things “your way”. Find the marketing methods that you enjoy and employ them consistently. Never let anyone tell you that you are missing the boat if you don’t do this or that. Only “you” know what works for you. You know your style better than anyone else.
